A while ago I described my findings concerning the missing Dho Chant in the Dho Formula, as variously
presented in such diverse texts as the dubious Liber Logaeth and Delomelanicon.
Now, a final piece has been added to the puzzle, and I offer you what I believe
is a full reconstruction of said chapter of the Necronomicon, as given by Abdul
Alhazred.
Let us first trace the
development of said formula.

The text of the oldest
Book of the Dead Names (sometimes known as “TheTrue Necronomicon”) is believed to be 4,000 years old and to have
originated in Mesopotamia, where its original title would be rendered Imsarra Girza Ush. This text contains a
section labeled “Of the City Situated Between the Magnetic Poles and of the Dho
Formula to Be Able to Gaze Upon It”, which describes the Dho Formula as
basically a meditative procedure. According to various Necronomicon
researchers, this text was kept, and translated, in the Library of Alexandria.
The next version of the
Formula is found in the pages of Delomelanicon–as rendered unto Greek c.200 b.E. from a purported Egyptian original, clearly
adapted from Imsarra Girza Ush- (which
I am referring to through the more faithful Latin version De Umbrarum Regni Novem Portis, MDCXCII) where we find small
variants added to the original simple method.
Then, we reach the book
universally known as Necronomicon, authored by Abdul Alhazred c. 735 a.E. and
granted its Greek title by Theodorus Philetas in the year 950. This book
presents a further expanded version of this chapter. There is no way to know which
of these additions were added by Abdul Alhazred in his Kitab Al-Azif, or by
later copyists, or even by his Greek or Latin translators. To further complicate
matters, as is well known, the various surviving copies of the book are
incomplete, and vary sometimes considerably due to the appalling lack of
faithfulness of some transcribers, editors and translators. The great number of
apocryphal Necronomicon editions only
add to the difficulty.
However, while we have
what appears to be the closest possible recreation of the original Mesopotamian
source, as published by Frank G. Ripel, it’s Alhazred’s greater compilation Kitab Al Azif or Necronomicon that is the standard central interest for us, in order
to understand the use of these formulae in the development of Necronomicon
magick.
I had long sustained that
the formulae found in the Imsarra Girza
Ush –the Dho and Dho-Nha formulae- were part of a progression, completed by
the Dho-Hna Formula and the Rite of Transfiguration given –quite incomplete and
distorted- in Dr. John Dee’s Liber Logaeth. My later, though brief,
consultation of a full copy of the Book back in 2010 –as told in my book El Código Secreto del Necronomicón- gave
me the opportunity of confirming this, even though I did not have time to check
the form given therein of the Dho Chant, which I believe to be a later
development by Alhazred. The copy of said chant I previously presented in this
blog was admittedly a second-hand reference, and although I held no doubt as to
its authenticity, I did have reservations about its faithfulness.
I owe Darby Crash Cordero
the opportunity of further completion of this task. Delving into the impressive
amount of Russian pseudobiblia and Necronomicon
research, he found a compilation titled 11 главый змей (The 11 Heads of the Serpent; published 2011) and shared it with the
Necronomicon Mystery Skool. This work collects a series of essays from various
authors belonging to the Abdullah Al-Hazred Library, and to the El Sosh Var or
E.S.V. collective of Necronomicon
Magickians. While I differ from some of the interpretations presented in these
pieces, I applaud the effort of these Russian fellow researchers, a finely
organized version of our Necronomicon
Mystery Skool. One essay explores variant versions of Gatewalking / Zonei
correspondences (which convinced me to soon share my own take on this, which I’ve
been working on for a long time now); other ones list and compare various
versions of the Elder Sign and of the sigil of Yog-Sothoth.

use of the Dho Formula, and gives a further version of the Dho Chant! Analysis
of the R’lyehian verses shows that it in no way contradicts the version of the
Chant I had previously found, but in fact complements it, in a more focused and
concrete way; this, I believe, was yet another missing part of the Formula, and
I have restituted it accordingly, reworking the various fragments and sources
to reconstruct as closely as possible the Dho Formula as presented in Alhazred’s
Necronomicon.
Before leaving you to
this recovered chapter from Alhazred’s Necronomicon,
I must commend the introductory message in the book, very much in the spirit of
our Skool, and expressing a sentiment I truly hope some fellow necronomers will
take into consideration:
“Several magickians who
published their articles on different sites, came to the conclusion that their
creations, being brought together, form a single whole. Not all these mages
were in agreement with each other, their goals were different. But they were
united by Those about whom they wrote. Therefore this book appeared.
“They who want secrets -
will receive secrets. They who desire truth already found truth. Truth without
secrets. Truth, indifferently becoming a secret for those who desire secrets -
according to their will... This is what this book is about”.

Of the City Situated Between the Magnetic Poles and of the Dho Formula
to Be Able to Gaze Upon It
There doth exist upon
Earth a City which is invisible and intangible for common mortals.
It was the birthplace of
the Ancient Ones.
Upon the disappearance of
the Old Ones, the fabulous City vanished from the sight of men. This occurred
in order to prevent the desecration of such mystical place. It abides still,
and there are formulæ which doth allow thee to see it, and to explore it.
The first method is the
formula called Dho, and here I shall discuss it.
The second is the formula
called Dho-Nha, and with thou shalt have access unto the City of the Ancient
Ones.
The third is the formula
called Dho-Hna, with which thou mayest enter with thy material body into the
very City.
The fourth is the formula
of Transfiguration, which may allow thee, if thou art prepared, to go further
still, but of this I shall speak in another place.
‘Tis redundant to warn
the unwary that the use of these formulas is meant for those favoured by the
Gods alone, or otherwise, for the Old Ones themselves. However, each hath their
veneer of free will, and may they do as they will, the punishment shall come to
him who hath done wrong.
I shall reveal to thee,
herein, the formula called Dho, and through it thou mayest gaze upon the
fabulous City of the Old Ones.
The Dho Formula allows
thee to see the inner city at the magnetic poles, where the servants of the Old
Ones hope to dwell when the Earth is cleared. And this spell should be sung.
Repeated repetitions of
the Dho Formula will enable the Inner Eye to penetrate the distant kingdoms
adjacent to the terrestrial spheres, as well as to the shores of the bottomless
Deep.
It will also allow the
Sorcerer to direct his inner vision to comprehend the distant and incredible
spheres beyond the worlds and stars known to us.
In this instance, fear
not to attract the Hounds of Tindalos.
This Formula may also be
used for reaching unto dimensions where the Great Old Ones are imprisoned.
Undergoing a trance with
this formula shall take thee Outside.
Thou need’st not to be
afraid of the Hounds because thou shalt encounter them only if thou dost go
unto the Veil gradually, and the Formula herein sends thee immediately through
the Veil. And beyond the Veil there are no Hounds.
The Dho Formula is
actually very simple.
The Dho Formula
The Formula of Dho allows to behold the hidden City at the internal
degrees between the poles of the Earth, which await the arrival of the
Ministers of the Old Ones, when the Earth shall be cleared.
Sit back, relax thy body
and thy mind.
Set the Incense of Dho, that
the Gods hath given to me and I have set down in my Book of Preparations, upon
coals and begin to lose thyself in its coiling spirals.
Now thou must focus thy
thoughts on the City and look fixedly unto the Sigil thou hast prepared for
this purpose. Sense in thyself the energy which doth emanate from it.
Speak the Dho Chant:
‘Umr at-Tawil f'thagn!
Ng’ag n’gat htagn ‘hf!
Uf’hfuh lhuf ngn!
Hfh lu hu fufh gha gn’gath fuh’luht!
Iä! Thusa!
Iä! Okkokoku!
Iä! Aulaniis!
El' Dho ah t’eir
dim b'yert to Dho
imr'yest nium eyh
Dho haust il'yeh hey!
Thou Secret, Black, and Midnight Mothers!
Thy hands do weave a deed without a name.
I conjure Thine Arte which binds and smothers,
Heed my call along thy strands and answer me!
Thou that doth release Ithaqua’s winds that they may rage
Against the spires of mosques; Thou that stir the tides
that Dagon may lead a ship to harbor or sink it on a wage;

Now speak repeatedly the words of the Dho Formula
as given in the Book of the Great Exile:
El' Dho ah t’eir
dim b'yert to Dho
imr'yest nium eyh
Dho haust il'yeh hey!
The Sigil
Look now upon thy Speculum;
discern, in the mist, the Earth. Discern thee, now, the tall, golden spires,
the abodes of the Ancient Gods. Perceive the cupolas that greet the dawn. Look
upon the lifeless streets. Beware! Someone watches still, let not them not see
thee, hide.
Observe with care the
mighty and shadowy temples where Æons ago the Old Ones did chant Their Dark
Vital Ceremonies.
Observe everything
carefully, because soon thy being shall be overwhelmed by such ageless majesty.
And then thou shalt need to divert thy eyes from the ancient Divine Habitations
and thou shalt fall prostrate and weakened, but rich from the experience given
by the vision. Put it to good use!
And then thou mayest
follow with the Dho-Nha Formula.
